Alder, Red: Alnus rubra

Characteristics: A soft relatively straight grained even textured wood, pale yellow to reddish brown in color.
Common Uses: Furniture, turning, carving, plywood and veneer.

Bubinga: Guibourtia demeusei

Other names: African rosewood; kevazingo (Gabon); essingang (Cameroons).

Characteristics: Moderately coarse even-textured wood. It can have straight or interlocked and irregular grain. Red-brown in color, with purple veining.
Common Uses: Furniture, veneer, wooden utensils.

Birch, Yellow: Betuda Aleghaniensis

Other names: hard birch, betula wood, (Canadian); Canadian yellow birch, Quebec birch, American birch (U.K.)

Characteristics: Straight-grained wood, with fine, even texture. It has light yellow sapwood, and reddish brown heartwood with distinct dark colored growth rings.

Characteristics: Hard, heavy, straight-grained wood with fine texture. White sapwood, with light reddish brown heartwood. Sometimes with bird’s-eye figure or curly figure.

Mahogany, Brazilian: Swietenia macrophylla

Other names: Central American, Honduras, Costa Rican, Peruvian mahogany, etc. (accordion to origin)

Characteristics: A medium-textured wood with straight-and-even or interlocked grain. Heartwood is reddish brown to deep red. 
Common Uses: Furniture, Interior paneling and joinery, boat planking, carving, pianos, and veneers.


Oak, Red: Quercus rubra

Other names: Northern red oak, American red oak (U.K.)

Characteristics: Straight-grained, with course texture and less attractive figure than white oak. Pinkish red in color.
Common uses: Furniture, interior joinery, flooring, veneer, plywood.

Other names: American white oak.

Characteristics: Straight-grained, with medium-course to course texture. Similar in appearance to European oak, but more variable in color. Impervious to water.

Pine, White: Pinus strobus

Other Names: Eastern white pine, Furniture pine (USA) Quebec pine, Weymouth pine, yellow pine (U.K.)

Characteristics: A soft pine with straight grain, fine even texture and inconspicuous annual growth rings. Its pale yellow to pale brown in color, with fine resin marks.
Common uses: Furniture, pattern making, joinery, musical instruments, construction, plywood.

Poplar, Yellow: Liriodendron tulipifera

Other names: Whitewood, tulip poplar (USA) tulip tree (U.K. and USA)

Characteristics: A moderately soft and lightweight wood, with straight grain and fine texture. White sapwood; pale olive green to brown heartwood, with colored streaks.

Characteristics: A tough wood, with rather course texture; usually straight grained, but can be wavy. Rich dark brown to purplish black.
